Resources to simplify access to research publications: browser extensions and more

I got asked in a previous post about browser extensions and other resources that simplify the process of getting access to academic research articles and ebooks — either subscription (paid) resources that your organisation has paid to make freely available to its students/employees, or Open Access resources that are available without any paywall to everyone. Since I am a librarian, and the librarian urge to help is strong, I thought this might be of value to others as well.

The resources I'm mentioning don't give you any additional access to previously unavailable material, but what they all do is simplify the process of accessing Open Access (i.e. freely available to everyone, regardless of institutional subscription) and subscription (things that are free for you to read because your university/organisation has paid the publisher to enable you to read them) material. They tell your device/browser that you have a login for a specific institution, and minimise the number of clicks, logins, or 'search for your institution through Shibboleth' steps between you and the full-text PDF.

NB: if you have logins for more than one institution, I would recommend that you use one per browser, as otherwise the two institutional logins interfere with one another. For example, I have two different institutional logins, so I use one in Firefox and the other one in Chrome on my work laptop. This applies to all the resources I'm listing below.

All will require a single installation per device and per browser, and once they're installed, they remain on that browser forever, although if you move on from your institution, they'll obviously stop working.

The first is Library Links through Google Scholar: Navigate to Google Scholar, and go to the settings tab. Then navigate to Library Links. If nothing is currently set up, you'll just see a tickbox for Open WorldCat - Library Search. Type the name of your university/organisation into the search box, and when you see its name appear under the search box, tick its tickbox. Once this is done, whenever you search Google Scholar, you will see direct 'library links' next to each result, and when you click them, it should take you straight to the full text PDF, unless your organisation does not subscribe to that journal.

LibKey Nomad and Lean Library tell your browser that you have institutional access to subscription full text articles. Whenever you're viewing something (e.g. an academic journal on a publisher website, or a list of journal articles on an academic database), they cause an additional little button or popup to appear, directing you straight to the PDF if it's available, or telling you that there's no access if your organisation doesn't subscribe. At my institution, the Lean Library popup also directs you straight to the option to request the article via interlibrary loan if no full text is available, and this may also be the case more widely. Both the links above will take you directly to webpages enabling you to add these extensions to your chosen browsers — although I can't guarantee they're compatible with every browser. You'll be asked to search for and select your institution, then login with your institutional login as part of the install process, but once it's set up, you won't be asked for this again.

NB: In my experience, being logged in to Google accounts in your browser when trying to set up these extensions can cause problems. I'd recommend logging out of Gmail or similar Google accounts while installing, and logging back in afterwards.

The above resources only work if you are a member of an organisation (usually a university, although some public service employers such as the NHS in the UK may also have similar institutional logins) that these resources recognise, and which pays for subscription access to academic research publications. Some universities also provide institutional logins for alumni, so you may find this works even if you have graduated — it's worth at least testing.

However, the UnPaywall browser extension works in a similar way, without any institutional affiliation required. This flags up open access versions of whatever papers you're looking at, if such versions exist, and simplifies the process to link you up with them. Totally free and legitimate — it works with data from Open Alex.

Yuletide 2026 Sign-Ups Open

Please read this post even if you have signed up before!

After reading this post, please look at the tag set to see what fandoms are available this year, and make a shortlist of what you plan to offer and request. (The same fandoms can be on both lists, if you want.)

Then sign up at the collection. We recommend you allow at least half an hour to sign up. While you can edit your sign-up over the next week, you will not be able to make any changes after sign-ups close at 9pm UTC 23 October.

If you would like to avoid matching to up to three other participants, with limitations discussed here, you may do so by filling out a Google Form from a link within the AO3 form. If you want to use this feature but cannot use Google Forms, please email the mods. Do Not Match requests will close 24 hours after signups.

Requests

  • You can request 3-10 fandoms

  • Each fandom must be different

  • You can request 0*-4 characters in each fandom

  • *Requesting 0 characters means "I am happy to receive any nominated character for this fandom. My author gets to choose which one(s)". That includes Worldbuilding for fandoms where Worldbuilding is nominated as a character tag. If no characters are nominated for the fandom, requesting 0 characters means “I am happy to receive any character or worldbuilding for this fandom.”

  • "AND" matching means your writer must include every character you select. If you are happy with a subset of your selected characters, indicate this with Additional Tags, and clarify any exceptions in your optional details.

  • You can only request characters from the tag set, though your optional prompts may mention other characters to appear too.

  • In some fandoms, you can request Worldbuilding as a character. You can find guidance on that here.

AND matching and additional tags
Generally, when you select characters in your sign-up form, it means you want and expect your gift to include all of those characters. This is a key principle for matching and assignments. However, some people like to give their author further options. We are using the Additional Tags section of the form for this.

If you requested 0 characters, or you want all the characters you selected to appear, you will tick the first Additional Tag option, which says "My gift must feature all of my chosen character tags (if 0: any from tag set)". If you think your situation might be different, please read this post about additional tags and select additional tags that are right for your requests. This information is also in the sign-up form.

Optional Details and Do Not Wants (DNWs)
"Optional details" = prompts, ideas, likes, explanations of how you see the canon. Optional details and DNWs can be recorded in the main text section of your requests.

Optional details are optional (ODAO)! Your writer doesn't have to follow your prompts, though they must avoid your DNWs. You don't have to give prompts here, either - though prompts and ideas may be a more inspiring first impression than a list of DNWs on its own. Prompts may be particularly useful if you are requesting a Worldbuilding tag.

See this 2020 post for some considerations when writing your DNWs. In 2024, we also clarified our rules and guidance about DNWs.

The Optional Details section of your AO3 requests is especially relevant if you have selected option two of the additional tags, "My gift must feature all of my chosen character tags; or it may use exceptions I explain in the form". In that case, please use this section of the form for explaining how and when your writer is allowed to leave out some of the characters you selected.

Please use minimal html in the optional details field. No images, please.

Please also note in the form if you're able to receive treats - or if you don't want them! Yuletide has a long-established culture of extra gifts, but if you created your account recently, you may have extra gifts turned off by default. Please check your AO3 preferences, and then state in your sign-up form whether you do or do not accept treats.

Letters
You can write prompts and preferences in another space, such as Dreamwidth, Livejournal, Google Docs, or Tumblr, and put a link in your sign-up. This is known as a "letter". Some people write letters; some don't. DNWs and character subsets that are listed in a letter but not in the Optional Details AO3 textbox cause confusion and difficulty for creators, and will not be enforced by the mods. Otherwise, your letter is an extension of your optional details and is treated the same way.

Important: You cannot add a letter after sign-ups close.

Offers

  • You can offer 4-10 fandoms

  • Each fandom must be different

  • You can offer 2-20 specific characters in each

  • If you want to offer a fandom that has 0-1 characters available, tick the "Any" box

  • If you are willing to write any combination of nominated characters, including Worldbuilding for fandoms where it is nominated, tick the "Any" box

  • "Worldbuilding" can also be selected as a character for many fandoms. Please check here to see how we're using it.

  • Offers are secret! Please don't declare openly what you're offering.

If you have several fandoms in which you want to offer to write Any nominated characters, you can make your last offer a "Bucket Offer". You can read about bucket offers in the Sign-ups section of the AO3 FAQ. This older tutorial has pictures!

Signing up!

The sign-up form is here.

Please check the tag set or the app - to come! when signing up. The autocomplete drop-down list in the sign-up form may not show all available characters. If they're in the tag set, you can enter them manually.

Sign-Up Summary

The list of requested/offered fandoms will be available after five people have signed up. Bucket offers do not show up in the list. Checking the sign-up summary for people you may be able to write for is a good idea - although many people sign up at the last minute. The sign-up summary says it updates hourly; in practice it may update less frequently.

Fandoms at 1-1 on the sign-up summary may mean that the same person is offering and requesting the fandom, not that there is a match.

Welcome to Yuletide!

Feel free to ask us questions.

Will you stay in this land forever?

It's been another gradually building busy week at work, and another cosy autumnal weekend at home. I've spent this morning at the pool (the lane to myself again for 38 out of 40 laps — I feel extremely fortunate), and now I've paused to take in the absolutely glorious sunlight flooding in through the front windows and catching the leaves on the hedgerow over the road in notes of gold and amber. All in all, perfect.

This past week, I've taught an induction and searching skills class to a group of 40 NHS doctors who are spending the year undertaking research alongside their clinical work, I've met individually with three stressed out students, and I delivered two inductions to two separate cohorts of 25-ish MPhil students. (Amusingly, in the latter of these two inductions, I noticed the two academic course leads — who had sat in to watch me teach — assiduously taking notes. I love it when the existence of the 'library links' institutional login function in Google Scholar settings, browser extensions such as Lean Library or LibKey Nomad which tell your browser you have institutional access to journal articles, and/or the fact that free interlibrary loans are a thing is brand new information to senior academics who've been working at the university for decades!)*

On top of all of that, I've signed up for a year long professional development course offered to staff at the university, and had the first class for that on Thursday. It was fun to meet all the other participants, and in a really nice setting — I think the whole thing will go well, although it does involve my nemesis: long-term group projects. One of the other participants immediately wanted to compliment me on my jumper ('Is that Donegal wool?' 'I ... I think so?').

This weekend is one of the points in the year in which our town somewhat resembles an episode of Gilmore Girls: an apple/harvest fair on the grounds surrounding the cathedral, filled with stalls selling craft, food (both food truck stuff to eat there, and things to take home like fudge, cheese, preserves etc) and drink. Most of it has an apple theme (spiced apple cider fudge and so on), and the wider town gets into the swing of things with fringe apple-related stuff as well (the bakery was selling apple pies and apple crumble danishes, our former hiking group friend who sells sourdough bread out of his house was selling apple bread, etc). Matthias and I were there for a couple of hours yesterday, eating food truck food, drinking seasonally appropriate drinks (hot spiced lemon and ginger drink!), and wandering around the stalls, looking anxiously at the sky which seemed to threaten rain intermittently.

Last night we signed up to MUBI for a free trial so that we could watch Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, Jane Schonbrun's follow-up to I Saw the TV Glow (which I thought was excellent) — a camp, meta, self-aware, queer story about viewers' relationship with slasher movies. In it, an early career filmmaker is tasked with reviving a franchise of 80s horror movies, and travels to the remote setting of the first film, where the ageing actress who played its final girl (played by Gillian Anderson) is living a reclusive life in the camp where her character survived the fictional carnage. But it's not really a slasher film itself — it's about the titular cinematic sex and death (the killer in the film franchise is literally called 'Little Death'; this is not a subtle movie), and our voyeuristic relationship with them, and about coming of age and queer awakening, and a lot about being trans, and how that might affect someone's relationship with their physical body, and the resonances of this with a viewer's relationship with bodies on screen, and so on. Fair warning that although it's not really a horror movie, there is a lot of exaggerated horror movie style violence and gore on the screen.

In terms of reading, I finished off Chronicle of a Life Mislaid, which I had thought was a memoir about Marina Warner's own life, but is really an (unreliable, as it says in the subtitle) memoir of her parents' marriage. Both led an extraordinary life — they met when Warner's father was among the Allied troops stationed in Italy during the final years of WWII; her mother and aunts (due to a childhood spent in the United States) spoke fluent English and sort of attached themselves to the Allied military as translators. After the war, she returned with Warner's father to England, and later to Cairo in the dying days of British colonial indirect rule of Egypt as part of the strange community of European, Middle Eastern and North African drifters who washed up in that part of the world from all over the Mediterranean, flourishing briefly in a kind of bubble of unbelievable privilege, and then drifting on when that world ended. While Warner doesn't go into full details, it's clear her parents' marriage was not a happy one — her father had aristocratic aspirations, but didn't have the budget to live that kind of life, and was a chronic and unsuccessful gambler and financial speculator (Warner includes some of his letters back to her paternal grandparents, which are always begging for money or hoping that this or that recently deceased relative will leave him a legacy), and those tensions seem to have weighed heavily. Warner weaves this personal family story with a wider critical look at the currents of class and empire that underpinned this particular moment in time, and their echoes at the point in the twenty-first century in which she was writing (Brexit looms large). I thought this was fantastic!

I'm still working my way through Hell's Heart (Alexis Hall), a lesbian retelling of Moby Dick IN SPACE. The book begins with quotes from (among other things) the Bible, and Jupiter Ascending, so you know pretty much what you're getting in for. I find it a lot of fun — almost every sentence is an allusion or reference to something else (and not just the book's source material), but I do somewhat wish that Hall had had the imagination not to default to a spacefaring far future in which every cultural force resembles an unsubtle and extreme version of contemporary right-wing values in the United States (prosperity gospel, rampant Ayn Rand-style individualism, worship of 'the market,' — and even a moment in which the 'face eating leopards' meme makes an appearance). I get that this all fits with the story that Hall is trying to tell (and maybe there is a corner of this book's universe in which the values of other, non-21st-century-United States cultures hold sway), but as a non-American, the uncritical lack of imagination in this regard did start to grate after a while.

The rest of my Sunday will probably involve a proper look through the Yuletide tag set and letters post, another swing through the apple fair (we need to get our yearly haul of rare varieties of apple!), making sloe gin with the sloes I picked from local hedgerows, and cooking soup for dinner. All very relaxing and cosy, and exactly what I need before another week of new academic-year busyness.

*If you are a current university student and want me to explain more about these things, ask in the comments — they will save you so many logins and apparent paywalls.

Updated Yuletide genAI Policy

Yuletide has had a “no AI” rule since 2024, as follows:

Your story must be your own work. Do not use ChatGPT or other generative tools to create content. If you're unsure how much of another source (e.g. quotes) can be included in your work, please check with the mods.

Unfortunately, since creating this rule, we’ve increasingly seen genAI works posted in fannish spaces where they are not welcome–including in fandom exchanges where they violate the rules.

This is an area where norms are evolving, ethical concerns abound, and ambiguity is rampant. We want to clarify our policy, how we will enforce it, and how we are thinking about AI use in exchanges.

What is banned?
Using a generative model like ChatGPT or Claude to create any of your text. You must write the words of your story yourself.

Why do you ban genAI?
There are many potential answers to this question, but the one that matters most is: genAI isn’t what participants sign up for. This event began as a way for fans to give and receive human-generated stories. We see value both in upholding that expectation, and in this particular form of interaction and creativity.

How will you enforce this?
The moderator and tagmod team already check all official assignments to see if they appear to be complete and contain the requested characters.

As part of these checks, we sometimes notice other potential problems, such as a work that includes a recipient’s DNWs. This year, the checking team may also spot a work that shows signs of being created with generative AI.

We can’t check every work in detail, so it’s also possible that we become aware of these signs after works are revealed.

If we have concerns about potential genAI use, we’ll investigate further. Tools and techniques for this investigation may include a close reading by members of the mod team who are experienced in AI-generated fiction, considering the work in the context of the poster’s past writing, and checking the work in Pangram or another genAI detection tool.

If, after investigation, we continue to have concerns, we’ll discuss the situation with the writer. We may seek a pinch hit for the recipient and may impose penalties on the person who posted the work, such as a one-year ban from Yuletide. We may also decide we aren’t confident the work is AI and choose not to take any action.

What is Pangram, and how does it work?
Pangram is an AI detection tool. Specifically, it’s an autoregressive LLM-based detector: it uses some of the same technologies as Claude and ChatGPT, but on a smaller scale. It compares input text against a large data set of human-written and AI-generated texts and scores input text based on weighted pattern matching.

What are your principles around the use of detection tools?
- We will never rely solely on detection tools to make our final decision on a work.
- We won’t use detection tools on all works; we’ll only use them when humans have already investigated a work and have concerns.
- We have named Pangram as a tool we may use because data tested in Pangram is not retained by Pangram or used to train their software, and because we have had some good results with Pangram on our own test data.
- Because the genAI landscape is changing so rapidly, we may choose to use a different detection tool for story checking. We will only use tools with a privacy policy that states they will not store or use the text put into them.
- If there is a dispute over a Yuletide story, we’ll inform any affected participants which tools were used in our assessment.

How confident are you that mods can spot genAI?
AI models are evolving constantly. Several of us on the mod team have already spent a lot of time familiarizing ourselves with AI-generated writing, and we’ll do our best to keep up with changes in the field.

We understand that identifying an AI-written story isn’t a matter of counting em-dashes or spotting a few telltale turns of phrase. No single “tell” will be taken as proof.

AI detection tools aren’t perfect, and neither are we! If we seek a pinch hit, that should not be taken as proof that the person posting the work used genAI. Similarly, our choice not to seek a pinch hit isn’t a final statement that the work is definitely human-written.

We will not take disciplinary action against a writer unless multiple mods have reviewed the work in question and we are extremely confident it was AI-generated.

How do you see this playing out?
We hope that for most participants, there will be no change whatsoever. After all, most participants are not using AI tools to write.

If a participant reaches out to us about a story that they believe to be genAI, we will take their concerns seriously. As a result of our investigation, we may seek a pinch hit or may simply follow up with the creator. We may also sympathize with the recipient's uncertainty but feel the work is likely to be written by a human, in which case, we will not take action.

What should I do if I think my gift was created with AI?
You are always welcome to reach out to us (yuletideadmin@gmail.com) to explain your concerns. We strongly encourage you to raise the issue privately with us ahead of raising the issue with the creator or talking about it publicly. This helps us deal with problems more effectively.

What should I do if I think a work was created with AI, but it wasn't given to me?
Please discuss this with the mod team (yuletideadmin@gmail.com) if you have specific and significant concerns about a story. Just as the mod team won’t rely solely on online detectors, punctuation use, or specific key phrases, we’d ask you to raise these concerns only if you have reasonable confidence in your ability to recognize AI-generated text.

What can I do if I'm unhappy with the result of a decision?
- You can give us feedback to improve our processes in future.
- You can refuse a gift you do not want to see on your gifts page. (You can refuse any gift that does not give you joy, for any reason.)
- You can block a creator or recipient with whom you wish to limit interactions.

Are people banned from Yuletide if they've ever posted genAI?
No.

Can I use a tool that gives me suggestions for summaries, titles, or improving my existing text, or that helps me brainstorm?
We encourage caution with these tools. Please review the fine print when using them and remember that you may be writing for a recipient who has strong reasons to dislike the use of genAI. We won’t issue bans for use like spelling and grammar checkers, but always remember the words of your story must be your own.

This is another place we want to encourage human interaction! Yuletide has an annual pool of beta reader volunteers who can help you develop ideas and refine their execution, and we warmly recommend reaching out to these volunteers.

Thank you for reading. We hope this clarifies our position and our efforts to celebrate fans of rare fandoms creating for each other.

Dear Yuletide 2026 author

Thank you for writing for me!

I'm pretty easygoing about what type of fic you want to write for me. I read fic of any rating, and would be equally happy with plotty genfic or something very shippy. I read gen, f/f, m/f, m/m and multi-ship fic, although I have a slight preference towards f/f, m/f, and gen that focuses on female characters. I mainly read fic to find out what happens to characters after the final page has turned or the credits have rolled, so I would particularly love to have futurefic of some kind. Don't feel you have to limit yourself to the characters I specifically mention — I'm happy with others being included if they fit with the story you want to tell.

Feel free to have a look around my Ao3 profile, as it should give you a good idea of the types of things I like to read. You can also look at my Yuletide tag, which includes past letters, and recs posts of my previous gifts and other fic I've enjoyed in previous Yuletide colletions.

I have treating enabled on Ao3 and would be delighted to receive treats for any of my requests.

( General likes )

( DNWs )

Fandom-specific prompts:

( Prisoner (TV 2026) )

( Romanitas trilogy - Sophia McDougall )

( Space Demons trilogy - Gillian Rubinstein )

( Winternight trilogy - Katherine Arden )

Don't feel you have to stick rigidly within the bounds of my prompts. As long as your fic is focused on the characters I requested, I will be thrilled to receive anything you write for me, as these really are some of my most beloved fandoms of the heart, and the existence of any fic for them will make me extremely happy.

Tagset corrections, pinch hit preparations, Do Not Match

Thank you very much for the corrections we've received so far to the tag set! Please keep them coming! The more errors you pick up now, the more confident we feel to open sign-ups, and the more smoothly sign-ups will go.

Tagset updates

We got a question about the character Zilch Alexander in 超探偵事件簿 レインコード | Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE (Video Game). Nominator, could you please help us clarify this character tag?

We unfortunately approved Octopath Traveler II in error, as it is too large. Sorry to get your hopes up, nominator - while we have now removed it, we hope there are other things you'll enjoy in the tag set.

Pinch hits

Every year we need creators to help us by taking on extra assignments, called "pinch hits". More on AO3. Some of these assignments are created from quirks of initial matching. Others occur when creators need to drop out of the event. We post a batch of pinch hits just after sign-ups, and then in batches throughout the event, including some very large batches at deadline.

Pinch hit details are posted at [community profile] yuletide_pinch_hits. To get notifications when new pinch hits are posted, you can subscribe to that community, sign up for notifications at a Google group, or assign yourself the "yulephs" role at the discord. We will shortly send a test message out to alert potential pinch hitters of oncoming sign-ups - so set yourself up with a notification message now & you'll be able to check if you're receiving alerts.

Do-Not-Match options

Last year we trialled the option for participants to avoid matching to specific other participants as assigned writers or creators. It seemed to work out OK, so we will proceed on the same basis this year: during and just after sign-ups, you will be able to tell us the names of up to 3 people you would prefer to avoid in initial matching.

More information about Do Not Match options

Limited Do-Not-Match option

Most of the time, the person assigned to create for you in an AO3-based gift exchange, and the person assigned to receive a gift from you, are determined by the tags you select in the sign-up form.

Some exchange moderators also offer participants the option to say "Please do not match me up with [ExampleUserName] or [ExampleUserName2]. I don't want to receive a gift from them or create for them." This feature makes it easier, for example, to offer a fandom requested by six different people including someone you'd prefer to avoid, and have peace of mind that you can still avoid that person.

Because of the large number of participants and the large number of people who have only one possible creator or recipient in Yuletide, we cannot offer this feature as flexibly as some exchanges can. However, we see a Do-Not-Match option as a valuable tool to reduce friction and make everyone happier, so, having trialled this option last year, we are continuing it this year. Please note that this is not an absolute guarantee you won’t receive a story from one of the people you list.

How it will work

When you sign up on AO3, the sign-up form will also link out to a Google form where you can list the AO3 names of up to 3 people you do not want to match to and can tell us if you want to avoid writing for a person, receiving an assigned gift from a person, or both. We will also ask for those people's AO3 ID numbers, which you can find on their AO3 profiles, and for the email associated with your AO3 name. We will not ask for the reason you wish to avoid a person.

After we run the matching process, we will check all matches against our master Do-Not-Match list. We will take the following actions:
  • If your assigned recipient or creator is someone you asked to avoid, we will attempt to match you to someone else.

  • If your only possible recipient is someone you asked to avoid, we will email you to recommend you expand your offers. However, we will leave the match in place if you do not respond in the first 24 hours following the close of sign-ups.

  • If your only possible creator is someone you asked to avoid, we will send out your requests with initial pinch hits.

  • If you are the only possible recipient for a creator you asked to avoid, we will leave the match in place, but will prioritize your requests for double-assignment to two creators. [Because of how matching works, there will always be Yuletide participants who start out with two assigned creators; generally we try to choose them at random.]

We will not take the following actions:
  • We will not ask a creator to drop out or expand their offers if their only possible recipient is someone who would prefer to avoid them.

  • We will not inform a participant that someone else has asked not to match to them. [This information will be restricted only to the core Yuletide mods and assistant mod, Isis, Morbane, pendrecarc, and Everett Grove, and will not be shared with the larger pool of Yuletide assistants.]

  • We will not review treats for unwanted matches. Putting someone on your Do-Not-Match list will not prevent them from creating a treat for you (but please see FAQs below for other tools to achieve this).

  • We will not prevent someone on your Do-Not-Match list from claiming you as a pinch hit. We will check our master Do-Not-Match list when assigning pinch hits, so if the first person to claim you is a person you prefer to avoid, we will leave a short amount of time to see if another claim comes in. But we will not hold your pinch hit indefinitely or tell the first creator they aren't allowed to claim you.

  • We will not ask you why you wish to avoid a particular match.

FAQs (foreseeable/anticipated questions)

Who am I allowed to put on my Do-Not-Match list?
Any three AO3 accounts you would prefer to avoid matching to. This can be for any reason, serious or unserious. Do not tell us the reason, please. If the reason is harassment or similar, we recommend reaching out to the Policy & Abuse team separately. You may only give specific names, rather than a description like "anyone who mostly wants porn".

Can't I just block people I don't want to match to?
Blocking is a useful tool, but it doesn't prevent matching. Adding other users to your block list stops them from giving you a treat (see item AO3-6502 on this news post). It also stops them from being able to comment on your work. However, it does not affect challenge matching. A person you have blocked can be assigned to create for you, and you can be assigned to create for them.

Wait, am I allowed to block people in Yuletide?
Yes. Feel free to use the blocking feature to improve your AO3 experience. However, blocking someone and also matching to them could lead to unhappiness for both of you - so please consider using all the tools at your disposal to avoid matching to people you have blocked. This could mean choosing not to offer a fandom if you suspect it has been requested by a person you wish to avoid, or it could mean using the Do-Not-Match option for people you have blocked.

What other AO3 tools exist to manage my gift experience?
If you wish, you can choose to receive gifts only from assigned writers in a gift exchange or people who have claimed your prompts in a prompt meme. This is sometimes described as turning treats on and off. If you created your account after February 2022, please review this setting in your AO3 account preferences. If you select the setting "Allow anyone to gift me works", you can receive treats. If you do not select this setting, only an assigned author can give you a gift in Yuletide.

Dear Festividder

Thank you for making a vid for me! I'm really forward to seeing it. Treats welcome too!

Music Preferences: Please avoid R&B, rap, country, dance or electronic music. Aside from that, use anything you like, including instrumental or spoken word. My favorite music is alt rock, punk pop (e.g. Green Day), folkie-Americana type stuff and classical but I like a lot of other music too.

Requested Fandoms:

1) Cabaret

Preferences: focus on Sally or Brian, or ensemble or relationships, or an overview of the film. A classic that I've loved forever. I love the mix of Weimar period, exuberance, sexy edginess, the fantastic visuals and the sense of doom.

2) Hacks

This show is both hilarious and moving. I'd love to see a vid about Deborah and Ava's friendship, the ups and downs, how much they mean to each other (not a shipper, so don't make it explicitly romantic). Or an ensemble vid would be great too, because there are so many great characters. Or character studies of either Deborah or Ava. Serious or funny, both are fine.

3) Ride or Die

Another show I loved about female friendships that was both funny and moving, also with great action. I would like either an overview, a focus on Judith and Debbie's friendship (could hint at shipping, but I don't want explicitly romantic), or a character study of Judith, or focus on the action/spy stuff, or something funny.

4) Riot Women

Another great show about female friendship! Not too long: 6 1-hour episodes. Again, very funny and moving, highly entertaining. Older women team up to form a punk rock band for a charity performance. They meet a woman going through a crisis who changes their lives. I think I'd prefer an ensemble vid or overview as opposed to a focus on any one character or relationship. (warning, all men are assholes in this)

5) Slow Horses

Great ensemble show, funny and suspenseful. I'd prefer an ensemble or overview, not focused on any one character or relationship. Could be funny or action-oriented, or serious.

6) Young Sherlock

Okay, here I totally ship Sherlock and Moriarty. I think they are adorable, funny and entertaining. It doesn't have to be a shippy vid, but feel free to go in that direction. I think the tone of this show is so light and quirky, anything serious wouldn't work all that well, but if you're inspired to do that, go for it. In any case, I'd like the focus to be on Sherlock and Moriarty, as opposed to Sherlock angst (unless you can make it hurt/comfort by Morarity), Holmes family drama or an individual character study.

Friday open thread: Yuletide plans for 2026

It's the end of the first week of the busiest time of year for me, and I feel spectacularly behind on everything other than work. Inevitably, this would happen at the same time that the Yuletide tagset is finalised, and everyone starts working on their letters before sign ups open next week.

With that in mind, let's talk about Yuletide in today's open thread. What are your plans this year? What looks good in the tagset in terms of your requests (obviously don't talk about what you're planning to offer since that would break anonymity)?

I have to admit that I've only barely made a start in going through all the nominated fandoms (that might be a task for the weekend), but I think I'm wanting to mainly request fic that's about various types of relationships between female characters. This is the first year since I began participating in Yuletide over a decade ago that every single one of my original requests has finally been fulfilled — it took eleven years of doggedly requesting the same fandoms and characters in some cases, but I got there in the end — and it feels very odd to be starting from such a blank canvas.

What about you?

"Manageable with Medication"...........

We HATES that phrase. I'm sure I'm not the only one here that does. A couple of times a yr my Insurance tries to get me to use one of their MD's as my Primary. Thing is, the closest specialist for my "Issues" is a 6 hr drive away. NOT going to do it when I have one 20 minutes away(traffic notwithstanding). My old insurance in Florida didn't but they don't "do" Tennessee. And EVERY TIME I argue the rep will say a version of the subject line.
Thing is, I'm a long time aids Survivor. I tested + the yr the test came out but my Partner had died two yrs prior from an aids related condition so probably 92? I was told I had maybe a yr and a half at the time. It wasn't until the early 90's I had to go on Disability mainly so I could get treatment. To give you an idea, my clinic that covers mid and east TN has only one survivor from the early 80's.....me. Nobody outside a 3rd world country(well, until recently) has gone more than a couple of yrs untreated. Often even an AIDS/HIV clinic has to ask clinics in major metros for suggestions because they are the only ones who MIGHT has ideas on treatments. Some GP would just google "aids meds" and call it a day. No thanks.
In addition to it we have all the "joys" of age and prolonged med side effects from obviously no long term side effect studies.
I wish they would just leave things alone when they are decently working(at the moment)....
Cheers,
Pat

Yuletide 2026 Tag Set Open! Corrections Welcome!

The 2026 tag set is available here on AO3! Please browse and enjoy! We're excited to bring this to you! You can also browse it in a browser app.

Fixes and Polishing

We, your mod and tagmod team, are ready to work on corrections. Please tell us what we need to fix! We may make posts with further queries, depending on the issues you raise. Please keep an eye out for those! Sign-ups are projected to start October 13. If nothing's wrong in your fandoms - or if you can multitask - take part in activity at [community profile] yuletide or the discord!

If your fandom is the wrong category... (such as Books when it should be Celebrities & RPF - etc.)...
  • first, please check if it is also in the right category. If it is also in the right category, we can't help.
  • If it's only in the wrong category, please tell us what it is and what category it should be in.
(Please note that if it's a canonical fandom on AO3, we can't change it in the Yuletide tagset - however, we can notify the wranglers of the issue.)

Tell us about…

  • if you nominated something, but you can't find it at all

  • if you nominated characters in a particular fandom, but you can't find them there

  • if the fandom or characters you nominated were changed to something incorrect

  • if you see the precise, exact same character tag (including its disambiguation information in brackets) in multiple fandoms

  • if a character or fandom name is mis-spelled (we don't care as much about disambiguations, so if the words in brackets entered after your fandom name are wrong (mis-spelled, misleading), feel free to tell us, but this may not be corrected.)

  • if you see something that doesn't belong

  • if you see two fandoms that are duplicates of each other

  • if you see the same character twice under one fandom

  • if your new fandom has been categorized in the wrong media category (and that is its only category).

For missing nominations and corrections to your nominations, please provide your nominations link.

DO NOT tell us:
  • if your fandom is in the wrong media category (a book under movies, etc), unless that is the only category that it is in. Please check ALL the categories before you report a problem.

  • if your fandom is in Uncategorized Fandoms. This is a work in progress, please be patient as we work through these fandoms.

  • if the characters in your fandom all belong, but the disambiguation tags entered in brackets after their names aren't all the same. Sometimes we have to enter really long strings after a character name to keep the character where they're supposed to be. We only care if the information in brackets is wrong.

LAST CALL for beta update and inbox page

It's only been... okay, I don't want to think how long.

We are preparing to take the beta update page and the beta inbox out of beta with the next code release. We don't have an exact date yet, but this is your last chance to tell us about problems!

To enable the beta versions: go to Beta Features and enable the "new Create Entries" beta test for the new update page and the "New Inbox Page" for the, well, new inbox page.

If this is your first time using the beta update page: nearly everything on it can be adjusted, moved, or removed to some degree. The upper right side of the update form has a " ⚙️ Rearrange Panels" link.

Not every panel is enabled by default! If you don't see something you're used to finding, look in the disabled panels. While in Rearrange mode, you can enable or disable panels, drag them to whatever position you want, and generally customize it to your heart's content.

Once we push the button and switch to the new update and inbox pages for everyone, we cannot keep the old ones available. We are so close to finishing the decade-long "get rid of the undocumented custom templating language from 1996 that no one else uses" modernization project that's been sapping our collective will to live that we can taste it, and we can't convert the old update page and the updated inbox page is the converted version. This is your last chance to alert us of problems. If you let us know after the switch goes live, we'll still fix it, but we can't guarantee how fast. Prevent future problems and test drive them now!

Nominations Queries Post 5

Last query post! Answer our questions and we'll give you the glorious tagset you've stuffed with exciting ideas! (More or less. We're still working on internal corrections.)

New queries

Batman vs Robin (2015) - nominator, we’re having difficulty finding Talia al Ghul’s appearances in this movie and it seems as though she is just briefly mentioned. We’d like to avoid a situation where someone would need to consume other canon to write her as a character in this movie. Could you please clarify, especially as we may have misread this? Another possible solution is treating this movie as half of a duology with Son of Batman (2014), as the prequel movie seems to give context to the events and relationship dynamics in Batman vs Robin, especially for Talia.

If we don’t hear from you we will approve the 2015 movie without Talia.

Unapproved RPF fandom - We have one podcast RPF nomination still unapproved. We foresee some difficulties with this nomination and would like to discuss it privately. Please email yuletideadmin@gmail.com if this is you!

Earlier queries

Book of Travels (Video Game) - the Malka Su appear to be an entire culture with distinct individuals; if so, we would not approve Malka Su as a single character here. Would you like to replace them with an individual Malka Su or perhaps Worldbuilding to prompt for their cultural impact on the world?

Die My Love - nominator, we’re not sure what was intended by the worldbuilding character nomination; can you let us know more about what you are looking for? If we don’t hear from you we will reject Worldbuilding.

Leningrad Cowboys (Movies) - The character nomination “Leningrad Cowboys (Characters)” appears to refer to a group of individuals. As we don’t allow group nominations when it's possible to pick an individual, can the nominator please pick a cowboy?

В Стране невыученных уроков - Лиа Гераскина | In the Land of Unlearned Lessons - Lia Geraskina - nominator, as some of your character nominations are in Cyrillic/Russian, we’d like to verify you’re nominating Vitya Perestukin, Katya - we believe this is Katya Pyatyorikina, can you confirm? - Liucya Karandashkina, and “textbooks”. While we’re fine with nominating textbooks as characters here since they come to life, at least three textbooks are specified - geography, grammar, and arithmetic - so could you please choose one?

The Last Guardian (Video Game) - Nominator, we cannot accept Other Trico Character(s) - would you like to choose another character nomination? If we don’t hear from you we will reject Other Trico Character(s).

Lord Huron (Band) - this is nominated without characters. Nominator, could you clarify what you had in mind, please? RPF, something related to the band's songs, something else? If we don’t hear back, we will reject the fandom.

The Moment (Movie 2026) - we’re not sure what was intended by the worldbuilding character nomination, as there doesn’t seem to be a clear speculative element to worldbuild around. Nominator, please let us know what you’re looking for. If we don’t hear from you we will reject Worldbuilding.

Neverwinter Nights (Video Games) nominator, we have heard from the Neverwinter Nights 2 nominator, who suggests you may want to keep your canons separate. So we are currently planning to update your nomination to Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark. If you would rather combine fandoms, let us know.

Oxygen Not Included (Video Game) - we have a character nomination for Duplicant(s), however, there are multiple named and specific Duplicants in this game as per https://oxygennotincluded.fandom.com/wiki/Duplicant#Established_Duplicants. Nominator, would you like to choose 3 of these to add to your Worldbuilding character nomination? Please include your nominations link. If we don’t hear from you we will only accept Worldbuilding.

Re-Education (Through Labor) -- Rise Against nominator, did you want the song or the music video?

The Scarlet Pimpernel Series - Baroness Orczy - this nomination includes The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel as a character; we will not accept this as the group contains distinct characters. Nominator, please pick a League member. Ffoulkes and Dewhurst are already nominated.

その時、ハ—トは盗まれた | Sono toki Heartwa Nusumareta - nominator, we can’t find a Shiina Hiroko in this - did you mean Shiina Yuko? If we don’t hear from you, we’ll approve Shiina Yuko. [ETA: we found Hiroko after all! Never mind]

Sweet Valley High - Francine Pascal - we have approved the character of Jacob Ferrel as Jake Ferrel.

天地剑心 | Sword and Beloved (TV) - we're having trouble finding the name Li associated with Qingtong. Could we get more information about this character please?

Tennis RPF - this fandom is too large. Nominator, can you suggest a more specific fandom name for these people? One suggestion from our tagmods would be "2026 Top 10 Men's Tennis RPF". Characters are: Ben Shelton, Flavio Cobolli, Frances Tiafoe, Taylor Fritz.

Terminator (Movies) - we have a separate nomination for Terminator Genisys, so would prefer not to approve the (Movies) umbrella label. Nominator of Terminator (Movies), is there a specific movie or series of movies that would work for your nominations of John Connor, Sarah Connor, Kyle Reese, and Marcus Wright (T1-3 & Salvation, possibly?)

ふつつかな悪女ではございますが ~雛宮蝶鼠とりかえ伝~ | Though I Am an Inept Villainess - we also have a nomination specifically for the Anime version and won’t approve both the general and the specific fandom. Nominator, which version are you interested in?

Tokyo Mew Mew - nominator, we won’t approve Tokyo Mew Mew Ensemble as that’s a group of named characters. Would you like to select another character?

月鳞绮纪 | Veil of Shadows (TV) - nominators, as per one suggestion, we plan to send through the various “Li Jie | Yuan Wuhuo” nominations as the following three characters: Li Jie, Original Yuan Wuhuo, and Butterfly Demon Yuan Wuhuo. Please let us know if you nominated Li Jie | Yuan Wuhuo and this does not cover the identity you nominated.

Viticulture World (Board Game) - we see you have nominated four colors representing the board game materials, but are unsure how they would function as characters; please let us know what you intended. We could also approve without characters.

Witch Detective - Can you please confirm the character of Lilo?

W.I.T.C.H. - as this query has been outstanding for some time, we have merged this nomination into W.I.T.C.H. (Comics) with characters Cornelia Hale, Hay Lin, Irma Lair, and Will Vandom. Nominator, if you wanted Cartoons instead, please share your nominations page.

花開時節 - Yang Shuang-zi - we're having trouble finding the personal name Kouzou for Kurota. Could we get more information about this character please? We also propose to approve this as 花開時節 | Seasons of Bloom - Yang Shuang-zi, but if someone thinks that is incorrect we'd be glad to improve it.

We are also still looking for corrections: If you notice a spelling or other error, please let us know:
-What the fandom is
-(If different) What the fandom should be
-What the characters are
-(If different) What the characters should be.

a million times a trillion more ([personal profile] dolorosa_12) wrote2026-10-04 04:16 pm

Sometimes you look so small, you need some shelter

It's been an extremely autumnal weekend, almost to the point of cliché. On Friday afternoon, I picked up this year's autumn wreath for the door, made of leaves and dried flowers and bunches of red berries. The whole thing casts the most glorious colours of light back into the house when the afternoon sun shines through the door — the effect is almost like a stained glass window. Yesterday was cold enough that I had my first hot takeaway coffee since April — it's been a good run of iced coffee, and the switch to my cold weather order of a flat white is always a personal sign of the change in the seasons. And if that wasn't enough, this morning saw the first fog of the season, blanketing the land all throughout my walk down to the gym for my Sunday 1km swim, although by the time I emerged from my laps, it had dissipated.

I have, of course, dived into this season with great enthusiasm. After breakfast, Matthias and I walked into Little Downham — which is my favourite of the local walks, taking you along a bridleway through working farms, paddocks of cows and horses (this time we also encountered a pair being ridden slowly down the bridleway), and ending up in a little apple orchard on the edges of the village. We'd come there with intention, and returned home with tote bags filled with all sorts of varieties of apples, plus a generous handful of sloes, since I want to try making my own sloe gin this year.

Here's a photoset of all the fruit and foliage, in the beautiful autumn light.

I'm not normally one for themed October viewing (Halloween is not really a big deal for me), but we did end up watching a very stupid Irish horror movie called The Morrigan last night for Saturday film night. The paper-thin premise sees an underappreciated archaeologist heading to a remote western Irish island to work on a dig site which she believes is the final resting place of the titular pagan Irish goddess (her hypothesis being that the Morrigan was actually a real historical ruler whose place in the historical record was suppressed by misogynistic Christian missionaries), accompanied by her resentful teenage daughter, and a sleazy and sceptical colleague. The island is, of course, isolated, creepy, and hiding secrets of its own, the dig site of course unearths a burial casket whose presence unleashes a wave of chaos and violence, and I of course spent much of my time yelling at the TV ('academia doesn't work like that!' 'radio calling doesn't work like that!' 'why is there a giant ancient forest on an island to the west of Ireland which faces directly at the Atlantic Ocean?!' 'why does the ancient pagan goddess speak Modern Irish?!'), but since I wasn't expecting much, it was hard to be disappointed.

On Friday evening, I travelled down to London after work, and met Matthias for a live event with some of the journalists from the Kyiv Independent (if you don't know much about this English-language Ukrainian news organisation, their about page gives a very paraphrased version of their extraordinary origins and success in spite of quite considerable obstacles; I've been a paying subscriber since February 2022). Like all journalists, those at the Kyiv Independent are used to being on the other side of the screen or page, maintaining a journalistic distance even when reporting on the existential fight of their own country and the terrible things they've witnessed, but the live event takes a different tone, with five different staff members (four journalists and the outlet's CEO) giving a personal take on life in Ukraine, interweaving ordinary experiences (embarking on a new relationship, caring for a sick parent) with the consequential and awful events they and their country are forced to live through. This was followed, after an interval (where, inevitably, I bumped into one of my colleagues and her husband, who are very involved with Convoy4Ukraine), with a panel discussion led by a journalist from the Guardian, about reporting on a war in their own country while also getting a fledgling independent newspaper off the ground and then grow its readership, which was also interesting — they're all extremely impressive people, and what they've built and achieved is truly amazing. No Ukrainian event would go ahead without some QR codes linking to a fundraiser, and in this case the Kyiv Independent team were paying it forward and helping the small, independent local media outlet Kordon Media (based in the northern city of Sumy, which is right on the Russian border) get through what promises to be a very challenging winter. I was delighted and unsurprised to see that within less than ten hours of the event in London, the requisite £9000 was fully funded.

This in-person event on Friday unintentionally followed on from another Ukraine-related panel discussion which I attended online — the book launch for Guardian culture writer Charlotte Higgins's work Ukrainian Lessons, which is about her experiences travelling around the country during the fullscale war, and the various cultural workers (authors, artists, opera singers, etc) she got to know, and more broadly about the role of art and cultural identity in a time of war. The panel was hosted by historian Olesya Khromeychuk (head of the Ukrainian Institute London), and also included author Sasha Dovzhyk and chef and author Olia Hercules. I of course left with a whole slew of books I wanted to buy, chief among them Higgins's and Dovzhyk's own.

Things are picking up at work. September to December is the busiest time of year for me in terms of teaching load (although really March to May is the most draining, since it's when my entire calendar is just filled with panicked students working on their dissertations and all wanting to meet individually for help), and I had my first timetabled classes of the year for postgraduates last week. These were fairly light-touch — a two-part induction co-taught with my amazing former colleague who now heads up a library in another faculty. This was a particularly friendly and enthusiastic bunch of master's students, and it was nice to start off this year's postgrad teaching on such a high note. Next week is really when the timetable starts to get very packed — I'm in every day, whereas normally I work from home twice a week, which should give some idea — and then it's much of the same until the second week of December. Let's see how it goes this time around!

Sunday is half over, and I want to spend the rest of the afternoon in calm activities. I'll try and finish my book (Marina Warner's family history/memoir Inventory of a Life, which so far has covered her parents' early relationship — her father a British soldier fighting on the Italian front during WWII, her mother a young Italian woman who attached herself to the Allied troops as an English translator due to a childhood spent in the United States — and the family's move to Cairo to head up a branch of WH Smith booksellers/stationery suppliers there, and is shaping up as an excellent and critical portrait of the lives, mores and values of the empire-building British upper class at a very specific point in time), I'll do a long yoga class, and I'll try to catch up on Dreamwidth, and generally reset my brain before a likely tiring week at work.

My autumnal equinox subscription perfume (complete with a seasonal short film and piece of art work and, yes, such a thing is a ridiculous indulgence) is designed to smell like wet heather and bracken ferns, and I love it so much. In case you can't tell, I am incredibly, incredibly ready for it to be autumn.

September TV shows

Just three shows finished in the past month, which probably reflects how little time I've had in the evenings (and how frequently Matthias's trains home from London have been cancelled, or massively delayed). In any case, these were the shows:

  • This Is Not a Murder Mystery, a cosy mystery with an absurd premise: a bunch of real-world Surrealist artists are invited to an English country house for a few weeks to create works for an exhibition and auction in the house, organised by the eccentric aristocrat who owns it ... only for a series of murders to take place, each one seemingly staged and inspired by a now-famous work of art by the artists themselves. It's a Belgian production, but the dialogue is mainly in English, and you'd think that 'English country house murder' and 'Surrealist art' would be an impossible crossover premise, but somehow the whole thing works.

  • The Five Star Weekend, a soapy drama in which Jennifer Garner stars as a widowed foodie Instagram influencer who is trying to get her life (and her social media following) back on track after her husband's death by hosting a long weekend party for four of her female friends from different stages of her life (childhood best friend, university friend, mum friend, and new online Instagram friend) in her sprawling childhood home in Nantucket. She goes into the event expecting carefully curated Instagrammable food porn and a photogenic choreography of activities, but everything very quickly goes off script due to her own unprocessed grief, and various social and family tensions that all come bubbling to the surface. The resolution is of course tidy and heartwarming, but if you wanted gritty or ambiguous, you wouldn't really be watching this show.

  • Sterling Point — which, if I tell you involves the same showrunner as The O.C. should hopefully give you some idea of the vibes: a soap opera about ludicrously beautiful and wealthy teenagers having extreme emotions against a great pop soundtrack in a gorgeous location (in this case a Canadian island in a lake, whose residents are a mixture of mildly resentful locals working in tourism and hospitality, and the wealthy American tourists staying in holiday homes over the summer). We've got secret long-lost siblings, love triangles, neglectful parents, surprise revelations, loads and loads of angst, and all the classics. When you start watching, you will be overwhelmed with a lot of very logical questions ('how is this seventeen-year-old American girl able to buy an international airline ticket and travel to another country without her father's knowledge or permission?' 'why does internet connectivity seem to come and go on this island whenever the plot demands it?' 'how is a teenager able to purchase a DNA testing kit on a remote Canadian island seemingly in hours when it's been previously established that there are only a handful of limited local shops?' 'why does an underage teenage boy have a pilot license?'), but you have to just shrug and roll with it, and accept that logic is not really a genre requirement here. I loved it in all of its ridiculous glory.

    Code pushed -- FYI

    Hi all,

I had to push some code live today to fix something, and that brought with it a couple of new things like if you have two-factor authentication (2FA/MFA) enabled, you got automatically logged out and it is now required to log in. If you don't, you can set it up if you want (you don't have to.)

This also means that if you have 2FA enabled, you will not be able to use 3P clients using your username and password anymore. You should be able to use API keys in most cases, but there's some nuance to that (and tbh, I just am not precisely sure what clients anybody even uses.)

Please do comment if you're seeing anything weird, as per usual, and we'll work on it. Thank you!

    Nominations Queries Post 4

We are 196 hours into tag approving! We began with 4563 nominated fandoms (though two different spellings of the same fandom are treated as two different fandoms for that total). We have 63 fandom nominations still to sort.

SORTED: The Beating Heartland (Audio Drama) - we’ve been unable to confirm the last name of Tucker Reese. Can the nominator please confirm that character for us?

Book of Travels (Video Game) - the Malka Su appear to be an entire culture with distinct individuals; if so, we would not approve them as a single character here. Would you like to replace them with an individual Malka Su or perhaps Worldbuilding to prompt for their cultural impact on the world?

SORTED: Cicero (Big Finish Audio) - we're having a little difficulty finding the character Marcus Pupius Piso in this audio drama. Could we get more information about his appearance please?

SORTED: Dancing☆Starプリキュア The Stage | Dancing☆Star Precure The Stage - this includes nominations for characters who only appear in the second musical. Nominators, do you want the second musical, both of the first two musicals, or something else?

SORTED: Every Day Except Christmas - for the character “Cravat-wearing Man in Late-Night Cafe”, does the nominator mean the man in the cafe called Albert's who comes in at 17:40 and speaks to the four seated men?

SORTED: Galaxy Princess Zorana (Video Game) - Tsirkony | Zolot are nominated as a single character, but as far as we can tell, they're separate characters. Could we get more information about this please?

Glaucomflecken Hospital (Web Series) - nominator, did you mean the animated web series Glaucomflecken General, or Dr. Glaucomflecken’s live-action YouTube videos? The characters you’ve nominated seem to come from the Jimothy Meets Rural Medicine short video - did you want that specifically, or a larger scope?

SORTED: Imperial Earth - Arthur C. Clarke - perhaps predictably, we are puzzled by the nomination of 'mathematics puzzles' as a character. Could we get a bit more information about this please?

SORTED: Islander - Anderson/Melton - we can identify two whales in this play: a whale calf called Arna and Arna’s mother, the whale cow. Nominator, please pick a whale.

SORTED: Kids In the Hall - we see this is an anthology nomination for several sketches, and Worldbuilding is nominated for just one of the sketches. Could we check what you had in mind? We generally approve worldbuilding on the level of a whole canon.

Leningrad Cowboys (Movies) - the character nomination “Leningrad Cowboys (Characters)” appears to refer to a group of individuals. As we don’t allow group nominations when it's possible to pick an individual, can the nominator please pick a cowboy?

SORTED: Marathon (Video Games) - from the characters nominated, it seems nominators are interested in both the classic games and the reboot from earlier this year. Could we please double-check you're happy with having them combined, or would you prefer the classic and reboot games are split out?

SORTED: Mickey 17 (2025) - for the character of the Creeper, could we check please which particular creeper is meant?

SORTED: モノノ怪 | Mononoke (Anime & Manga) - especially as a wide set of disambiguations have been chosen here, could we please check which version(s) of canon you are particularly interested in, nominator?

SORTED: 猫と竜 | Neko to Ryuu | The Cat and the Dragon (Anime) - did you mean Mosha-mosha I or Mosha-mosha IV, please?

Neverwinter Nights (Video Games) and Neverwinter Nights 2 (Video Games) - nominators, we won’t approve both in this format as Neverwinter Nights (Video Games) encompasses both games, however, the characters nominated for the former are The Seer (Neverwinter Nights) and Valen Shadowbreath who are both from the DLC Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark. We can either update Neverwinter Nights (Video Games) to the DLC name, or combine both under Neverwinter Nights (Video Games) - nominators, do you have a preference?

SORTED: Ogre Battle (Video Games) - we have one nomination for the character Alphonse Loeher and another for Lanselot Tartaros. As far as we can tell, these are the same person–if that’s the case, we plan to combine the characters as Alphonse Loeher | Lanselot Tartaros. Please let us know if there is a difference between the two!

SORTED: Pact - Wildbow - for the character nomination “Revenant (Pact)”, our understanding is that there are two different revenants with different nicknames and characterization. Could we please clarify which one you are looking for?

SORTED: Real InfoWars - nominator, we can’t find where Bryan P Tetraheder or Nick Lutsko appear on-screen in the web series. Can you (or someone else) help, please?

SORTED: Sefer Yeshayahu | Book of Isaiah - we also have a nomination for the Tanakh. We would like to include the Isaiah nominations within the Tanakh; please let us know if you have a problem with this. Could we also please clarify what you were looking for with Worldbuilding?

Slo-Pitch (TV 2026) - nominator, based on what you entered, we think you are interested in the characters Leanne McCain, Boris Jagensdorf, Ashley Natasha, and Joanne (Arnolds or Pico depending on source; we can just send her through with a first name but if you have an ironclad source we're all ears). Please confirm this.

その時、ハ—トは盗まれた | Sono toki Heartwa Nusumareta - nominator, we can’t find a Shiina Hiroko in this - did you mean Shiina Yuko?

天地剑心 | Sword and Beloved (TV) - we're having trouble finding the name Li associated with Qingtong. Could we get more information about this character please?

SORTED: Tales of the Five Hundred Kingdoms - Mercedes Lackey - we have nominations for Original Godmother Characters and The Tradition. We won’t approve Original Godmother Characters; meanwhile, we understand that The Tradition is a force that acts on peoples’ lives to make them live out fairy-tale narratives; we are not sure it works as a character for our purposes. Would Worldbuilding (Five Hundred Kingdoms), which could encompass prompts for both of these ideas, work for you instead?

SORTED: Todo Va a Estar Bien - nominator, we can’t find any source for the last names for the characters you’ve nominated as Fausto Colmenares, Julia Perez Laborde, and Ruy Villegas. Can you or anyone else point us to something that verifies them? If not, we’re happy to approve with just their first names and a disambiguation.

SORTED: The Unmagical Life of Briar Jones - Lex Croucher - we’re unable to find the character Richard Parker. Does the nominator mean Robert Parker, or can you help us identify this character?

SORTED: Valerius Mysteries - Jennifer Burke - could we please get more information on Lucius Julius Atreus? We're having trouble confirming the first part of this name.

Viticulture World (Board Game) we see you have nominated four colors representing the board game materials, but are unsure how they would function as characters, please let us know what you intended. We could also approve without characters.

SORTED: 雨霖铃 | Zhan Zhao Adventures (TV) - we can't find the character Hong Changbi, but we can find a Chang Hongbi. Nominator, could you confirm who you meant please?

花開時節 - Yang Shuang-zi - we're having trouble finding the personal name Kouzou for Kurota. Could we get more information about this character please? We also propose to approve this as 花開時節 | Seasons of Bloom - Yang Shuang-zi but if someone thinks that is incorrect we'd be glad to improve it.

    Corrections

As we have now approved a large number of nominations, it's inevitable we may have introduced errors - sorry about that! If you notice a spelling or other error, please let us know:
    -What the fandom is
-(If different) What the fandom should be
    -What the characters are
-(If different) What the characters should be.

    Friday open thread: self improvement

Let's start this weekend on a positive note! This week's open thread prompt asks:

What is something you can do better now than you could do this time last year?

My own answers are mainly exercise related. I can swim faster — this is not a specific goal, since I don't swim competitively (I swim because if I didn't, my mental health would be in the toilet), but it is satisfying to see in any case. I'm also stronger all around — I can lift heavier weights in the various exercises I do in my weekly power pump classes in the gym — and that is an actual goal that I set myself for the year, so I'm incredibly pleased. I think with both the swimming and the strength, I will hit some kind of physical wall at some point (I can't just keep getting faster at swimming forever, and I will reach the limits of what I'm physically capable of lifting in terms of the weights), but my background in gymnastics has given me a lifetime of understanding that every person has their own physical limits, and I have no problem with that. For now, it's just fun to see how much I'm slowly able to improve.

I also think that every year I get just a little bit better at understanding my garden. I'm entirely self-taught (other than little pieces of passive understanding I glean from time to time via gardening accounts on Instagram), so each year it's a process of trial and error, learning from what worked, and avoiding things that didn't — and that's enough for me.

    What about you?
