Dear Yulegoat
Oct. 13th, 2013 10:53 amHi Author!!! You're going to write me a story!!! I am so unimaginably excited at this thought that I am practically vibrating on my bed as I write this. Sorry the letter is kinda late, but please don't take that as an indicator that I am not interested or thrilled that you're going to write a special treat just for me. This is my first year participating in Yuletide and I am hoping it will be merely the first of many.
Going into this, there are only a few requests for me to make. Please don't write me a story focussing on: rape, sexual assault, child abuse, abusive relationships (either physical or emotional), or graphic torture. Mention of such things is okay in the story if necessary for flavour or to set a particular scene or scenario, but please don't make it the focus of the story or described in dripping detail, as that will be beyond triggering for me. On the other side of the scale, things that will make me beyond delighted are: relationships (either romantic or friendship) built on mutual trust, respect, and support, strong women, strong characters, human characters, portrayals of personal growth in unexpected ways...the list is long and varied.
Anyways...on to the fandoms!!!
The Outlaws of Sherwood - Robin McKinley
Cecily. For me, this book was all about Cecily. I love her relationship with Little John and the fact that he never asks her to be anything less or different than exactly what she is. I love her relationship with Will, in that he loves her so much and wants to help her, but no matter how much he loved her he never really SAW her. And Much I just love for the wholehearted generosity of his character and the sheer richness of everything he is.
Irish Mythology
Have entirely free rein here. I'm as Irish as they come and I love all the stories born out of our mythos. I'll be happy with anything you give.
Tigana - Guy Gavriel Kay
Again, this is all about the girl. Alais bren Rovigo is a wonderful character as a woman seeking to fulfil her own yearning to be more in a world where her role should be really closely defined. I would love to see more of the relationship between her and Devin. More than that, I would love to see more of the relationship between her and her father. Does he allow her to enter into the family business, now that she's discovered her love of the sea? How do they negotiate that? As for Baerd, I want to see how he moves forward and past his pain now that Tigana has been reborn and his sister lost. How does he forge a new path for himself?
Swallows and Amazons - Arthur Ransome
I grew up with these books and I adore them. Mostly what I'm hoping for here is to see what became of the characters once they grew into adulthood or young adulthood. Did Nancy grow less headstrong and what did she find beyond the lake to consume her boundless tumultuous energy? Did Peggy find a way to feel less overshadowed by her sister? What came of Titty's introspection? Did Dorothea make it as a writer? Did the bonds of friendship hold strong?
Emelan - Tamora Pierce
I love Emelan. Love it. I bonded with Tris really early and strongly. I love her as a character, and I love the interaction and dynamic between her and Briar. I will be honest, I do ship them romantically, but I know that it's not everyone's cup of tea so while I would be beyond thrilled if you were willing to write me a Briar/Tris fic, I'm not insistent upon it. Sibling closeness is fine. :)
